Holidays to Peru are expected to be popular in 2011

It has been revealed by the Mirror's travel expert, Nigel Thompson, that holidays to Peru are expected to boom during 2011. With Machu Picchu remaining high on people's 'must see' lists, and the South American country becoming increasingly accessible, flights to Peru are expected to rise over the coming year.

Whilst South America as a whole is expected to see an increase in tourism during 2011, Peru in particular is likely to increase in popularity. Celebrating its 100th anniversary of discovery in July, Machu Picchu still draws thousands of tourists from across the world. Hidden away in the mountains of the Andes, Hiram Bingham journeyed from Cuzco one hundred years ago to discover what is thought to be the last stronghold of the Inca's. Now accessible to travellers either through a challenging trek along the Inca Trail or by means of a stunning train journey which meanders through the Sacred Valley, the centenary celebrations are likely to attract many.

Meanwhile Lima offers a great destination for tourists, whether they want to explore the city itself or head out to other popular places within Peru. A number of carriers, including TAM, United, and Continental Airlines, offer modestly priced fares to this intriguing country, allowing tourists to discover continents increasingly further afield. And with British travellers wanting to explore evermore new and exotic locations, Peru is set to be a top holiday hotspot of 2011.
