Explore the French Dordogne
Sarlat could be a perfect holiday retreat for those wanting a historical break
With the winter months quickly passing by, many individuals will be looking ahead to the summer and the holidays that they intend to enjoy. Whilst some may venture across the world to new and exotic destinations, many British holidaymakers will remain in Europe. With France's Dordogne still immensely popular with tourists, the historic town of Sarlat could offer the ideal holiday venue.
One of France's most ancient towns, much of the 14th century architecture and feel is still present in Sarlat. Nestled in the beautiful landscape of the Dordogne's Perigord Noir region, it is the ideal location for those wanting to step back in time this year. Following some very sympathetic restoration of the town, the gorgeous narrow alley streets and old stone buildings have been repaired to their former glory. Sarlat Cathedral is particularly stunning, with parts of it, such as the belfry, dating as far back as the ninth century.
A perfect town for taking your holiday at a slow pace, tourists can enjoy the quiet nature of this wonderful setting. Cars are few and far between, allowing for the streets to seem even more historical, whilst quaint shops and cafes allow for simple shopping and refreshments. With the area offering several old towns and villages nearby, tourists have a choice of locations within which to revel in French history.
Located about 35 miles from Bergerac airport, travel to this fantastic destination is readily available from Southampton. With Air France and Flybe both offering services to the French region, it could be the perfect holiday retreat for those wanting a historical break from the day to day bustle.
