Heathrow Continues to Excel in Long Haul Popularity
Heathrow continues its long haul popularity
Whilst many travellers may have believed that Heathrow's problems over the past year with the recession, severe weather, and volcanic ash might have caused issues with its popularity, a new study has revealed that it remains as popular as ever.
Whilst London Heathrow has been subject to much negative press in the past 12 months, figures from operator BAA showed that January saw the strongest traffic on record. A substantial increase in flights to both China and India has helped figures, opening new routes for passengers to take advantage of. Five million people passed through the huge airport in January, a rise of 4.6per cent on the figures recorded for the same month in 2010. Meanwhile BAA's airports continue to do well overall, with Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Southampton, Gatwick, and Heathrow noting a total 3.8per cent rise in passengers when compared with January 2010.
Speaking of the positive results for the airport, chief executive of BAA, Colin Matthews, said "Passengers want quality service at our airports, from the beginning to the end of their journeys. The better we collaborate with airlines and ground handlers, the better the experience will be for customers both in normal operations and during disruption."
The news will be welcomed by those passengers looking to travel through London Heathrow. With 88 airlines operating from the airport, and offering services all over the globe, travellers can be assured that Heathrow, despite its problems, remains an efficient and popular British airport to use.
