Travel Guide Company Expect Greek and Spain Revival

Popular travel guide firm Lonely Planet has revealed that it expects countries such as Greece and Spain to make a comeback against popular holiday destinations such as Turkey and Egypt. Whilst cities such as Cairo and Antalya have noted considerable increases in holiday interest, gains in the pound against the euro will attract many holidaymakers back to popular European locations with the lure of cheap getaways.

Making the prediction, The Lonely Planet explained that a rising exchange rate in favour of the British Sterling would make holidays in the eurozone cheaper than they were at the end of 2010. Whilst both Spain and Greece remain popular locations for British holidays, tourism has suffered in the past few years with the recession and weak pound making breaks more expensive. And with British travellers looking for cheap holidays in hot climates, many have ventured slightly further afield to Egypt and Turkey.

With the recovery of the pound, popular destinations such as Alicante, Athens, Rhodes, and Barcelona have once again become more accessible to British holidaymakers on a budget. "If you are thinking about going somewhere in the Mediterranean you can certainly look at Spain and Greece as places that offer more good deals at this time of year," a Lonely Planet spokesperson said, adding that those holidaying at the start of the year would benefit from slightly cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.

With a huge number of British airports including Manchester, Birmingham, and London offering competitive flights, individuals looking for a Mediterranean break can once again indulge thanks to the pound's strong gains against the euro.
