With climate change a very real process affecting the earth, a new travel guide has outlined the top 100 destinations at risk of disappearing from the planet. With rising sea levels and melting ice giving a dim future for some holiday destinations, holidaymakers may want to explore these beautiful regions before they are lost for good.
Whilst most planning their holidays do not want to rush, the latest travel guide lists some of the most outstanding destinations which are in danger of disappearing beneath the waves. The 100 Places to Go Before They Disappear guide is an eclectic list of holiday hotspots, with locations dotted across the planet.
Coming in towards the top of the list is the Indian Ocean's Maldives, a beautiful place where islands and cities such as Male are only metres above sea level making them at risk to due to the rising waters. Venice and many locations in Hawaii such as Honolulu are also mentioned as places that could disappear beneath the waves, whilst the Great Barrier Reef could disappear to ongoing sea pollution. Elsewhere, Canada's Hudson Bay could also be at risk of melting ice, with spring ice now breaking up far earlier in the year than previously recorded as recently as the 1970's.
Speaking of the guide, the editorial team said "The comments, articles and illustrations contained in this book convey a clear message - climate change is a threat to our way of life and to Earth as we know it. The effects of climate change are already being felt in many places all over Earth." So for those wanting to enjoy some beautiful but at risk locations, now is certainly the best time to visit.
