Palma Shown to be a Favourite Spot Among Northerners

It has been revealed that those living in the north still prefer to visit Spain over any other holiday destination. Making use of Newcastle airport, many northerners travel to Amsterdam before heading onto the Mediterranean favourite.

Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority showed that thousands of people from the north of England continue to flock to the holiday hotspot of Spain. Though many actually fly to Amsterdam first, data revealed that 75 per cent of travellers don't stay long, simply using the international hub to catch onward connections. Mallorca's Palma was shown to be a favourite spot for those leaving Newcastle, closely followed by Alicante. And whilst Paris came third, the fourth destination was Malaga showing people's continued interest in the region.

Speaking about the more than three million travellers making use of Newcastle airport, the airports Aviation Development Director, Chris Sanders, said "People are becoming far more adventurous in respect of where they fly to."  And with Dalaman and the Dominican Republic soaring by 50 per cent and 3900 per cent in popularity, Mr Sander's remarks seem to be true.

As Newcastle has seen a large number of travellers heading to Spain so too has Durham Tees who noted that 35,346 passengers headed to Alicante last year. Both Mallorca and Tenerife also figure in the airports top ten destinations, with the latter noting a 445 per cent increase in popularity. Amsterdam also proved popular with head of PR for Durham Tees airport, Robin Tudor, saying "Whilst the more traditional Mediterranean destinations are always popular from Durham Tees Valley Airport, KLM's popular flights to Amsterdam continue to be the busiest flights as an important year-round link." Whilst recent news has shown that seat volume increases are allowing more global travel than ever, for people in the north of England, Spain remains a firm favourite destination.
