Rise in passengers for june

New figures have shown that Gatwick Airport enjoyed a growth of 5 per cent in the number of passengers passing through its doors during June 2011. With the airport noting particular interest in short haul flights, the increased numbers of services from airberlin, Ryanair, easyJet, Norwegian and British Airways were said to have helped considerably.

Gatwick is well regarded as an international travel hub in the UK and in comparison to 2010, the airport saw a 5.2 per cent increase in traffic for 2011. Short haul flights to European destinations were particularly popular during this time, rising by 13.9 per cent when compared to the same period last year.  Meanwhile there was a dramatic 29 per cent rise in the number of people flying between Gatwick and Ireland, whilst the North Atlantic routes increased by 3.9 per cent.

The results come following recent news that Gatwick is to offer direct flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Airlines. With 90,000 British travellers heading to these destinations every year, Gatwick is likely to attract many more due to its direct services. And with a new route to Frankfurt, Germany's financial centre, also opening in October, growth at Gatwick is set to increase further still.
