Glasgow Airport has celebrated 65 years of flights with KLM by receiving a vintage plane on its airstrip. The Dakota DC-3, dating from 1944, was decorated with a 1950's version of the Dutch company's livery and landed at the Scottish port as part of festivities.
KLM's first Glaswegian flight took 18 passengers from Amsterdam on 21st May 1946. Speaking of the historic significance, the airline's Chief Operating Officer, Pieter Elbers, said the occasion celebrated the ongoing commitment to providing a network of services to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. "From April this year, KLM increased its frequencies to Amsterdam from all three Scottish airports, which reflects the airline's investment in the Scottish regions," he said, adding "We also have further expanded our long-haul network to include Miami, Rio de Janeiro, Xiamen in China and Kigali in Rwanda, which all increases Scotland's connectivity. This benefits both business and tourism purposes."
Glasgow Airport's commercial director, Francois Bourienne, revealed that they were delighted to have KLM celebrate the significance of the year by having the iconic DC-3 land at the port. And with numerous KLM services remaining at the airport, the ongoing commitment between airport and airline is assured for many years to come.
