Flights with Delta Could Provide Cardiff to New York Service

It has been revealed that the Welsh Government and Delta Airlines are in talks to commence a direct service to New York from Cardiff. The move would see the first scheduled flight between the two cities, opening up business and leisure opportunities for those living in Wales.
Hopes of a direct service have been raised before, with up to 179,000 passengers within an hour's drive of Cardiff currently having to fly to America via London Heathrow or Luton. By increasing the radius around the airport to all potential passengers within a 90 minute drive, the service could provide around 506,000 people with an easy and hassle free direct service to the U.S.
Under current negotiations, Delta is looking for the Welsh Government to cover losses for the service over the first three years; a figure which could reach £1.4m. And whilst EU regulations prevent direct funding from government bodies to airlines, finance could be provided in terms of training or in-flight Welsh marketing campaigns.
With Cardiff airport looking to implement the direct route to America, in addition to new services to the Middle East and Germany, 2012 looks to be a prosperous year for both the airport itself and the local residents in need of easy access to flights abroad.
