It has been revealed by United Continental Holdings that they are to spend $500m on upgrading and revamping planes in the Continental and United brands. Having merged the companies in 2010, the investment will see premium class seats installed, as well as new entertainment systems, Wi-Fi and more luggage storage space.
In addition to purchasing 25 new aircraft for the fleet, an order which includes the latest Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the company said that they would be renovating older planes to give all customers a new and exciting flying experience. Speaking about the modernisation of the fleet, United Continental Holdings Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Smisek, said "We are planning many other product enhancements, both on the ground and in the air."
From September, installation of new flat bed seats, iPod connections and on-demand audio will begin on United's 26 Boeing 767s. Upgrades to Boeing 777s will then take place, adding new entertainment systems for all three classes in addition to premium flat bed seats. Meanwhile, in 2012, Airbus A319 and A320 planes will see overhead luggage storage almost doubled in size, whilst streaming video will be brought to Boeing 747s so that passengers can enjoy audio-visual entertainment via their laptops, tablets and smartphones. And with the fleet undergoing a complete revamp, demand from customers is expected to be high as individuals flock to see these latest additions.
