Heathrow Airport Notes Best August Success
6.6 million passengers in August hits record for Heathrow
It has been revealed that Heathrow Airport saw 6.6m passengers in August 2011. The figures are the largest for any August on record showing that, despite the turbulent economy, individuals are still making use of airports, in their millions, to travel for both holidays and business.
Revealing the figures for the year's most busy holiday period, owner of the airport, BAA, said that over 82 per cent of all seats offered from the London airport were sold. Destinations over the North Atlantic were the most popular, with Delta departures to Detroit from Terminal 4 increasing in number by 41.9 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2010. Meanwhile, Montreal's popularity grew by 50 per cent, with both British Airways and Air Canada offering flights to the destination from Terminals 5 and 3 respectively.
Chief Executive of BAA, Colin Matthews, said "Together with our airline customers, we served a record number of passengers this summer. Our passengers tell us we are delivering a better service for them and we are investing £1 billion a year in new passenger facilities." Meanwhile, with Newark and JFK airports also noting strong demand from those travelling to New York, Heathrow's passenger figures look set to remain high.
