Flights with American Airlines to Enjoy Increased On Demand Service
American Airlines to extend services significantly
American Airlines has revealed that, after a successful trial of their on demand service, they are to roll the scheme out across all of their narrowbody fleet. Currently the service is offered mainly on the airline's transcontinental flights between New York and San Francisco and Los Angeles. But with Wi-Fi being incorporated into more planes, the service will be extended significantly.
By the end of 2012, American Airlines will have 400 Wi-Fi enabled aircraft in their fleet, offering passengers the chance to take advantage of in-flight streaming video and entertainment direct to personal, Wi-Fi enabled laptops. Wi-Fi services do not have to be paid for, instead travellers simply connect to the network and rent the movies or television shows that they want to watch.
Speaking about the scheme, American Airlines Vice President of Marketing, Rob Friedman, said "Initial customer feedback shows our entertainment on demand product is a hit with our customers, and we feel it's a great example of how we continue to deliver products our customers truly value. In addition to our expansion news today, we are thanking our customers for their loyalty by extending the free Internet and introductory pricing offers until Oct. 15."
Though the scheme will largely be offered on domestic flights, it will allow British travellers, making connections, a new form of entertainment. And with the popularity of the scheme, it's only a matter of time before it extends to international flights and other airlines too.
