Chernobyl Becoming Tourist Attraction
hernobyl a not so obvious tourist attraction
There were times when a holiday destination was one of paradise and safety. However, with British travellers looking to expand their horizons and explore a different side of life, places such as Chernobyl and Chechnya are becoming popular locations.
With Kiev offering access to Chernobyl, recent holiday figures have shown that interest in the area is rising. Approximately 10,000 people are now exploring Pripyat, the town nearest to the site of the worst nuclear accident in the world. Meanwhile, Rwanda and its capital city of Kigali have previously been highlighted as top spots for travel, despite the dangers that continue to blight the nation. Meanwhile, Cambodia is also drawing the masses, with 2.5 million people heading to places such as Choeung Ek; sites which were once witness to some of the worst genocide ever.
Travel expert Emma O'Boyle said "As Brits look for their next great travel experience, it seems destinations that only a few years ago would never have been an option are now being considered. We're seeing rapidly growing interest in destinations like Rwanda and the Republic of Macedonia." She added that a wide range of British individuals are showing an interest in new holiday possibilities. And whilst beach holidays still remain popular, those wanting to take in some of the world's more modern history are increasingly attracted to dangerous holiday hotspots.
