East Midlands Airport is to offer a one-off flight to New York, showing airlines the transatlantic potential that the airport has. Having been announced in May, the scheduled departure to Newark Airport will leave on Thursday 17th November and return three days later.

The milestone will see the first ever New York bound flight leave East Midlands Airport, with managing director of the airport, Brad Miller, expressing that he'd wanted to instigate such a flight from the very moment that he took the job in 2010.

Talking of the important step for the airport, Mr Miller explained "The first direct service to New York from East Midlands Airport is a significant step forward for us. We are extremely proud to have been able to give people in the region the chance to experience all that New York has to offer, at such a magical time of year." He added that the uptake for the one Jet2 flight had been high, demonstrating the demand for transatlantic flights from the region.

With Jet2's managing director, Ian Doubtfire, expressing his delight at being the first carrier ever to make the journey from East Midlands to New York, many will be hoping that such a service will see scheduled flights brought to the region in the future.
