Springtime in France - the Nice Carnival
Culture lovers to love the nice carnival
The Nice Carnival has to be one of the oldest such events in the world and dates back to the 13th century. Back then it was a lot more difficult to get to the city, but with today's budget airlines and low-cost flights, visitors can attend from all over the world. It is considered to be the celebration held before Lent begins and is the last chance to indulge in all the rich foods and drinks from which most people abstain during Lent.
The Carnival King arrives at the beginning of the celebrations and each year the carnival has a theme. The King is accompanied by 20 or more floats, which are elaborately decorated, as well as giant puppets, musicians, artists and dancers. These performers come from all over the world. Events during the carnival include the Battle of Flowers. Again, numerous floats will parade through the city covered with flowers. Visitors to the city can purchase tickets to sit in the stands and watch the parade, although there are specific standing areas throughout the city.
Guests taking flights to Nice at this time of year should expect to find the streets filled with both locals and tourists browsing the many gift and food stalls that line the streets.
