Top Destinations for Theatre Goers
Destinations for culture loving tourists
Milan has a number of opera houses and theatres. La Scala is world famous and regularly features operas by Verdi and Puccini. Popularity means that tickets should be ordered in advance and an evening there is a chance to dress formally. Flights to Milan are available at a low cost.
New York has a theatre land to rival London's West End. Broadway is the place to go for the latest big name musicals and other productions, and off-Broadway plays are the ideal way to enjoy a show in a smaller venue and see emerging talents in acting and writing.
Salzburg has a number of theatres including the Salzburg County Theatre, which shows traditional plays. For something a little different, the puppet shows at the Salzburger Marionettentheater are a good choice. There are also regular festivals in the city to commemorate its most famous son, Mozart.
Alternatively tourists can head back to the birthplace of the play, Athens. The city is home to one of the oldest theatres in the world, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, where the works of the ancient Greeks are staged. More contemporary performances can be found at the Dora Stratou Garden Theatre.
