Statistics released by the airport show that passengers numbers on the route surged by 533.1 per cent last month compared with the April 2007.

Other popular scheduled flights in terms of passenger growth included those to Bratislava, Warsaw, Inverness, Chambery, Dusseldorf and Paphos.

According to the airport, more than 712,000 flyers passed through its gates last month, representing an increase of 6.2 per cent compared with last year.

"These figures represent even more good news for the airport and we are delighted that it is yet another record-breaking month," remarked Joe Kelly, acting managing director at Birmingham Airport.

German carrier Lufthansa recently launched a new route to Hamburg from Birmingham Airport, with flights taking off from the hub six times a week in total.

Holidaymakers will be able to take advantage of twice-daily services to Athens from Stansted with Aegean Airlines, as well as flights to Vilnius in Lithuania with Lithuanian Airlines.

Nick Barton, strategy and solutions director at Stansted, said that the airport now provides more direct scheduled flights to destinations in Europe than any other British hub.

"We're delighted to be extending those links further with the arrival this week of Athens and Vilnius onto our comprehensive route network," he remarked.

Stansted currently serves more than 33 scheduled and charter carriers carrying a total of 23.5 million passengers every year to and from more than 160 destinations.

The airport is hoping to build a second runway in the near future, which would help it to build capacity of about 35 million flyers a year.

The daily non-stop flights take off from Newcastle at 09:50 BST, arriving in the Norwegian city at 12:40 local time. The return leg departs at 13:10 local time and lands in Newcastle at 14:00 BST.

These new flights replace a previous Eastern Airways service that flew to Stavanger from Newcastle via Aberdeen.

"We have provided travellers with a comprehensive network of domestic services from Newcastle for many years and our first non-stop international route from the airport links the vibrant north-east with the European culture capital," commented Chris Holliday, chief operating officer at Eastern Airways.

Stavanger has been named one of this year's European Capitals of Culture. Some 1,000 arts and cultural events are set to take place in the city as part of the celebrations over the course of 2008.

"Spain and Portugal are popular destinations for Irish sun seekers," commented Aer Arann managing director Garry Cullen.

"Aer Arann's flights to Malaga and Faro provide summer sun destinations direct from Galway and Waterford Airports."

Meanwhile, those flying from Cork can now enjoy extra flights to Dublin - including extra early morning departures - and Edinburgh, as well as the reintroduction of services to Southampton.

Aer Arann also said it expects to launch new routes to France from Ireland later this month.

Flights to and from New York, Abuja, Bangalore, Beijing, Cairo, Cape Town, Lagos and Phoenix will move from Terminal 4 to Terminal 5 on this date.

All eight services account for about one-quarter of the British Airways schedule for Terminal 4. The move had been originally scheduled to take place earlier this year, but was delayed when the full extent of the issues at the new terminal came to light.

"We have taken this decision in the interests of customers, who remain our priority at all times," said British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh.

"Terminal 5 is now working well and we are pleased we can confirm our plan to move in some additional flights on June 5th."

Earlier this week, British Airways released figures indicating that over 1.4 million passengers have used Terminal 5 since it opened.

Previously beset by problems with its baggage handling system, the facility has now been operating normally for several weeks, according to British Airways.

Other features include reading material, Wi-Fi, phone and fax services and a number of flight information screens. The lounge is open to all passengers regardless of which airline they are flying with or of which class they are travelling in.

It will initially cost £16 per person, including VAT, to make use of the Servisair lounge.

"The new executive lounge will be an excellent addition to the airport's facilities," remarked Inverness Airport manager James Walton.

"We have a high proportion of business travellers at Inverness who will find this facility of enormous benefit."

Airlines operating from Inverness Airport include Eastern Airways, Aer Arann and British Airways.

"Hamburg is an excellent destination to visit, whether on business or leisure and boasts magnificent promenades, shopping malls and trademark canals," commented Peter Vella, business development director at Birmingham Airport.

He added: "Hamburg has many parks and gardens, making it Germany's greenest city."

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany. Its attractions include the historical Old City district, its port and fish market, the Alster lake, the town hall and the city's various shops and zoos.

The carrier recently announced the receipt of extra investment that could help the airline to expand into more destinations in the Middle East, the Far East and Africa, supplementing its existing business class flights to Dubai and New York.

Swiss and Lufthansa also featured in the top ten table for international airlines. All three carriers currently operate a number of flights from the UK to destinations across Europe.

Flight frequencies on Swiss's route between London City Airport and Geneva were recently increased, while services from Newquay to Dusseldorf and from Bristol to Frankfurt have also been introduced by Lufthansa for the summer season.

Meanwhile, Austrian continues to run a number of flights from London to Vienna and Innsbruck.

The daily non-stop flights took off for the first time yesterday (May 1st) using Boeing 757-200 ETOPS aircraft, which can carry up to 16 business class passengers and 158 economy flyers.

Travellers on the flights take off from Edinburgh at 11:50 BST, landing in the Big Apple at 14:35 local time.

Meanwhile, the return leg departs from New York at 22:00 local time, arriving in Edinburgh at 10:20 BST.

"Delta's new flight connecting New York to Edinburgh continues our successful international expansion, which includes 13 new international destinations this year," commented Glen Hauenstein of Delta.

The airline celebrated 30 years of offering transatlantic flights earlier this week, with the carrier's first such service taking off from Atlanta for Gatwick Airport on April 30th 1978. It now operates about 37 transatlantic routes.

The airline has announced that it is to scrap its inflight beauty offerings and expand its range based in the Heathrow Clubhouse lounge.

Treatments at the facility look set to increase by 70 per cent as a result, while spa facilities will continue to be offered in the airline's other Clubhouses.

"We continually review and adapt the product we are investing in to ensure it reflects what is most valued by our customers," commented Lyell Strambi, chief operating officer at Virgin Atlantic.

"As a result of the review, we are increasing the number of beauty therapists working at the Heathrow Clubhouse."

The carrier unveiled its new Clubhouse facility in Boston in March. The £1 million lounge includes a library and business centre, a living area, a brasserie and a deli.

Other Clubhouses are located at Gatwick Airport, as well as both JFK and Newark airports in New York and hubs in Washington, San Francisco, Johannesburg, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Passengers booking a flight with the airline after this date will be required to pay £26 for a short-haul return journey and £126 for a long-haul return flight where each single trip lasts less than nine hours.

Long-haul flights of more than nine hours will carry a fuel surcharge of £158 for a return trip. Single flight charges are equivalent to half of the total surcharge for the relevant return journeys.

The airline also said that it expects to increase fuel surcharges in non-UK markets.

Rising fuel surcharges is a trend that one analyst has said could become more prevalent in the near future as fuel costs begin to account for a greater proportion of airlines' outgoings.

Speaking on Channel 4 News, aviation analyst Laurie Price said that these increases must be passed on elsewhere in order to allow them to keep operating in a "viable" manner.

While the scheme is currently only available for those travelling from Hamburg to Munich or Frankfurt, it is hoped that it will be rolled out further if it proves successful.

The service sees flyers who check in online and select the option to do so being sent a boarding pass via email or SMS to their internet-enabled handsets. These passes include information such as passenger name, flight number and a 2D barcode.

Those travelling with just hand luggage will be able to go straight to security and board the plane without using a paper document.

Lufthansa also said that further enhancements to its online check-in system, such as the ability to enter passport and visa details, will be introduced at the start of May.

Earlier this year, a spokesperson for British Airways told the Telegraph that the carrier was following mobile developments closely and that it was "interested in any technology which will make our passengers' lives easier", potentially signifying the introduction of mobile boarding passes in the UK in the future.

Meanwhile, carriers are also upping their game when it comes to inflight drinks, with Delta offering a service that sees cocktails shaken up in the aisle in front of the passenger.

"Everything has been upgraded. Just as the customer in a restaurant has become more sophisticated, refined and demanding in terms of their food, that demand has filtered to the airlines," commented Stephan Pyles, a famous American restaurateur.

Last year's World Airline Awards saw Gulf Air win the accolade of best first class catering, with Austrian Airlines and Etihad taking away the equivalent prizes for business class and economy class food respectively.

Responding to the Treasury's consultation on whether to introduce the new charge, which would replace air passenger duty (APD), IATA chief executive Giovanni Bisignani said the main downside of the tax is that it would not be environmentally effective.

APD currently brings in about £2 billion of revenue every year. The proposed aviation duty would generate £2.5 billion, rising to £3.5 billion by 2012, and would be in place by November 2009.

"I want to know where the money will go. How many trees will the chancellor be planting with £2.5 billion? Padding the UK budget at the expense of holidaymakers, business travellers or exporters is not sound environmental policy," Mr Bisignani commented.

Environmental issues have been top of the agenda for the aviation sector of late, with a number of major organisations - including British Airways, Airbus and Boeing - signing a declaration to do more to tackle climate change at the Aviation and Environmental Summit in Geneva earlier this week.

British Airways also said that it is to increase flight frequencies on its routes from London City to Nice and Edinburgh in September.

"Dublin is an important new route, linking two financial capitals and we are delighted to be able to offer a three-a-day service in direct response to passenger demand," commented Peter Simpson, managing director of the CityFlyer service.

Last week, British Airways revealed plans to operate daily flights from Gatwick Airport to New York as of October.

"Direct flights from London to Palanga offer a splendid opportunity to visit the beautiful Curonian Spit, the seaport of Klaipeda and the popular summer resort Palanga and its Amber Museum, which has the largest amber collection in the world," commented Indre Trakimaite, director of the Lithuanian National Tourist Office in the UK.

Other attractions of interest in Palanga include its botanical gardens, the Pajurio regional park and the Church of Saint Marie. The destination is also home to a number of annual events, as well as offering access to sports such as windsurfing, parachuting and volleyball.

Singapore Airlines and British Airways came second and third respectively, while both airlines placed first and second when respondents were asked about food service.

Other findings from the poll included the statistic that 44 per cent of travellers perceived in-seat televisions as the most valued amenity, while 37 per cent said they would pay up to ten per cent extra for a more comfortable seat with greater legroom.

More than a quarter said a full meal is their most valued comfort feature onboard flights.

"At the end of the day, a TV dinner is all flyers are really asking for," remarked Matt Daimler, founder of SeatGuru.com.

Meanwhile, almost six in ten flyers were found to prefer to check in online at home, with 14 per cent citing airport kiosks as their favoured method of check-in.

Earlier this year, a survey by Rough Guides found that travellers believed Virgin Atlantic to be the most child-friendly airline.

The carrier said the flights, which will land at JFK Airport in the Big Apple, are set to begin on October 27th and will run daily.

According to the airline, the new route will bring the total number of services it operates to the New York airport to 62.

However, British Airways said that it is to pull its daily flight from Manchester to New York in October, although it will be adding services to Porto and Valencia from Gatwick in the same month.

"The new Gatwick service will give our customers even more choice when flying between London and New York," commented Lynne Embleton of British Airways.

"Not only do we already have an extensive schedule from Heathrow to both JFK and Newark, but next year we will launch business-only flights from London City."

The carrier recently launched new services to Genoa and Antalya from Gatwick, with further short-haul additions to be made over the course of the summer.

With British Airways moving its Warsaw flights to Gatwick Airport, the Polish airline is now the only carrier on the route, running three services a day between the two capital cities.

LOT Polish has also recently launched new flights to Beijing from Warsaw, offering a potential connection for Britons intending to travel to the Olympic Games in August.

"Heathrow remains the first choice departure airport for business travellers and we therefore anticipate continuing traffic growth on our Warsaw flights from London," commented LOT Polish UK and Ireland regional director Slawomir Noszczak.

Travellers to Warsaw can take in attractions such as the Royal Castle, St John's Cathedral, the Saxon Gardens and the Grand Theatre.

The city also hosts events such as the summer Mozart Festival and the International Street Arts Festival.

The new entity will bear the Delta name and will benefit passengers through the provision of more destinations and further opportunities to earn frequent flyer miles, according to the two firms.

Passengers have been advised that the merger will take up to eight months to complete, meaning that those with reservations with either airline can assume that their flight will run as normal.

Customers with both carriers will not have to rebook if they have a confirmed reservation and all existing sales agreements will continue to be honoured.

"The new carrier will offer superior route diversity across the US, Latin America, Europe and Asia and will be better able to overcome the industry's boom-and-bust cycles," commented Northwest Airlines chief executive Doug Steenland.

Delta is known for its coverage of the Caribbean, Latin American, European, Middle Eastern and African markets, while Northwest Airlines has traditionally had strengths in the Asian sector.

The extra service will begin on April 20th and will operate until October 25th. More than two million Virgin Atlantic passengers have flown on the route since it was launched over a decade ago.

An Airbus A340 aircraft will operate the new service, complete with Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class and premium economy cabins. The new flight will take off from Heathrow at 17:30 BST and land in Washington at 20:55 local time.

The return trip will leave Washington Dulles International Airport at 23:10 local time and arrive in London at 11:35 BST the next day.

"This new service gives Virgin Atlantic passengers the best possible choice in flight times," commented Virgin Atlantic chief executive Steve Ridgway.

He added: "They can choose the existing morning departure from Heathrow to Washington, or wait until the late afternoon to leave London."

Last year, the airline announced plans to kit out its entire Heathrow fleet with more premium economy seats.
