The Tirol Tourist Board pointed out that there are a number of advantages to taking a skiing trip near the end of the season, including late bargains on equipment.

Visitors will also benefit from shorter queues at lift stations and fewer people on the slopes, allowing them to spend less time waiting and more time skiing.

A late-season break also brings a higher chance of warm weather, with the tourism agency claiming that temperatures are occasionally high enough to allow visitors to "ski in a T-shirt, get a tan and enjoy a beer on the sun terrace".

Travellers who choose Tirol as their destination this year will be able to attend a number of events in the region, including the St Anton Spring Festival (April 9th-11th) and the Maxx Mountain Glacier Festival in Solden (April 30th-May 2nd).

The easiest way to reach the Tirol area is by taking flights to Innsbruck, which are available with easyJet, Austrian Airlines and other carriers.

The Unite trade union has called a three-day strike starting on March 20th and a four-day walkout from March 27th over a dispute with the airline relating to pay and conditions.

However, the carrier revealed that many cabin crew members have shown their willingness to work during the industrial action, while the number of airlines offering charters or spare seats to help affected passengers has also increased.

This will enable British Airways to reinstate some of its routes and provide extra capacity on services including flights to Vancouver, which is currently hosting the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games.

Willie Walsh, the airline's chief executive officer, said: "I am delighted by the numbers of cabin crew who have been getting in touch with us to express their disillusion with Unite's position. Our crews just want to work as normal, do their usual terrific job and look after our customers.

"We will now have the potential to fly more than 4,000 additional customers per day and serve more destinations."

An £800 million deal to build the facility was ratified this week by representatives of BAA and senior figures from construction firm HETCo, a joint venture between Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O'Rourke.

Terminal 2 will provide a new home for Star Alliance carriers based at London Heathrow, such as bmi, Air Canada and United Airlines.

It will be "one of the most modern airport terminals in the world", offering faster connections, improved services and better facilities for passengers, according to BAA.

Colin Matthews, chief executive of the airport, said: "Heathrow is improving and our exciting plans for Terminal 2 reflect our ambition to make passengers' journeys better and position Heathrow as the European hub airport of choice for the world's airlines and passengers."

It was recently announced that Heathrow had developed a new departure procedure for Singapore Airlines' Airbus A380 that will save fuel and emit less carbon dioxide.

Commenting on the appeal of the Malaysian capital, Mr Hassan claimed that the city is unique within Asia.

"No other Asian destination can offer such a diverse heritage and unique culture as Kuala Lumpur," he said.

"The city is Asia in a nutshell, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences. The result is an exciting melting pot of numerous religions and varied cuisines, with a flourishing arts scene."

Visitors to Kuala Lumpur were encouraged to see attractions including the Islamic Arts Museum and the Lake Gardens.

Dominic Paul, managing director of bmi mainline, said the flights will provide a "good schedule and competitive prices" to Berlin, which he described as "one of Europe's most exciting cities".

He added: "Berlin is a major centre of culture, politics, media and science in Europe and customers travelling with bmi will have the opportunity to discover the cultural attractions Berlin has to offer."

The route is the second new service confirmed as part of the airline's summer schedule, with new flights to Vienna being announced in January.

Bmi is relaunching its product offering on continental European flights from March 28th with the aim of serving business and leisure customers equally.

Ningaloo Reef is easily accessible from the shore and is one of the few locations in the world where whale sharks are known to congregate regularly.

It stretches for some 260km along the coast, making it the largest fringing reef in the world.

Visitors who would like to take the opportunity to swim with the whale sharks can join one of the specialist tours that set off from the small coastal towns of Exmouth and Coral Bay.

There are several other marine species to see along the coast of Western Australia, including manta rays, dolphins, turtles and over 500 types of tropical fish.

One of the easiest ways for international travellers to reach the region is by catching flights to Perth, which are available with Qantas, Emirates, Malaysia Airlines and other carriers.

The airline aims to carry around 45,000 passengers each day on March 20th, 21st and 22nd, while thousands more will be transported on alternative British Airways flights or with other operators.

From Gatwick Airport, the carrier will maintain its long-haul schedule and operate more than half of its short-haul services.

Over 60 per cent of long-haul flights from Heathrow Airport will still be available during the first three days of industrial action, while the short-haul schedule will be reduced to around 30 per cent of full capacity.

Arrangements for the second strike period, from March 27th to 30th, will be announced after the first walkout has ended.

Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways, said: "Due to the numbers of cabin crew who have called in to offer their services over the weekend, the schedule will be slightly larger than we had originally anticipated.

"Despite the desire of Unite's leadership to ground the airline, the flag will continue to fly. Around 60 per cent of our customers will be able to fly as planned and many thousands more can be rebooked onto alternative BA flights or onto rival airlines."

The country's Cultural National Institute and rail operator Ferrocarril Transandino confirmed that the railroad providing access to the ancient Inca city will resume operations on March 29th, with tourists able to visit the site from April 1st.

Visitors can travel from the city of Cuzco to a station at Piscacucho, before boarding the train to Aguas Calientes near Machu Picchu.

An official ceremony will take place on March 29th to mark the reopening of the railway.

People who are planning to walk along the Inca trail are advised to check with Peruvian ground handlers first, as the government has issued warnings that some areas are still not safe following flood damage.

The Peru Tourism Department pointed out that there are "many alternative and outstanding treks on offer", including the Salkantay and Lares routes.

Flights to Cuzco are available with carriers including LAN Airlines, TAM and Iberia.

Another option for people travelling to Peru is to catch flights to Lima, the country's capital.

Travellers are also set to benefit from increased capacity on Flybe's services from Southampton Airport, which the carrier said will assist people who had planned to fly from Gatwick or Heathrow Airport with British Airways.

Flybe said that it "regularly reviews" travel disruption caused by industrial action and will be able to offer a "reliable and great value" alternative to passengers this month.

British Airways' cabin crew staff are set to strike for three days from March 20th and for a further four days from March 27th.

The airline said it was "extremely disappointed" that Unite - the trade union representing the workers - had announced plans for industrial action, which it said will cause "massive disruption for hundreds of thousands of our customers in the run-up to the Easter holidays".

The aircraft will be used on flight EK004 - which departs from London Heathrow at 20:40 local time - from July 1st.

Currently, Emirates operates one daily A380 flight from London to Dubai that leaves at 14:15.

The aircraft is equipped with amenities including an onboard lounge, shower spas, satellite phones at every seat and the Ice inflight entertainment system.

Salem Obaidalla, Emirates' senior vice-president of commercial operations in Europe, said: "This is an important development for Emirates as this is the first route where we have made a long-term commitment to double up on the double-decker.

"London Heathrow was one of the key airports we had in mind when the A380 was first conceived and the new deployment allows more passengers travelling to and from the British capital to experience this remarkable aircraft."

The airline first deployed the Airbus plane on its London Heathrow to Dubai route in November 2008.

Other destinations served by the Emirates A380 include Bangkok, Seoul and Sydney.

The organisation revealed that overall passenger traffic at European airports was 3.9 per cent higher in the month than in January 2009.

Among group one airports - those that handle more than 25 million passengers a year - Istanbul and Rome Fiumicino posted year-on-year increases of 18.3 per cent and 13.5 per cent respectively.

There were also traffic increases at a number of hubs that host between ten and 25 million passengers per year, including Moscow Domodedovo and Athens.

Olivier Jankovec, director general of ACI Europe, said: "These January figures confirm the improvement of the last months.

"However, we are still at -8.5 per cent for passenger and -10.1 per cent for freight compared to January 2008, so quite some distance from where we were."

The report covered a total of 110 airports, representing nearly 80 per cent of all European passenger traffic.

Forty per cent of respondents said they have missed out on holiday time because they have been too busy at work, while 15 per cent simply couldn't afford to go away.

Bernard Donoghue, co-chair of the British Tourism Week executive council, said: "The research shows that in total a staggering one in five British workers do not take their full holiday entitlement.

"Taking a holiday is good for the British economy, your health and a decent work-life balance."

British Tourism Week will run from March 15th to 21st and will feature events including the Best of Britain and Ireland show at the Olympia in London on March 19th and 20th.

Several representatives from the British travel industry association, as well as MPs, peers and civil servants, attended an event at the House of Lords to launch the document.

The manifesto includes five priority demands, including a call for consumer protection for flights, holidays and accommodation to be reformed so all members of the public can travel in confidence.

Abta has also urged the government to alter air passenger duty so the tax is based on efficiency of aircraft and the overall distance travelled.

Airport capacity across the UK - and in the south-east in particular - was also identified as an issue, as well as the need to create a dedicated tourism minister.

Mark Tanzer, chief executive of the association, said: "Abta is serious about taking the concerns of travel agents and tour operators right to the heart of government and this manifesto puts the issues we're fighting on in black and white.

"None of the political parties should be in any doubt where the travel and tourism sector now stands on our key issues."
