Nick Barton, strategy and solutions director at Stansted, said that the airport now provides more direct scheduled flights to destinations in Europe than any other British hub.

"We're delighted to be extending those links further with the arrival this week of Athens and Vilnius onto our comprehensive route network," he remarked.

Stansted currently serves more than 33 scheduled and charter carriers carrying a total of 23.5 million passengers every year to and from more than 160 destinations.

The airport is hoping to build a second runway in the near future, which would help it to build capacity of about 35 million flyers a year.

The cheapest destination in Poland itself was found to be Ustka, a popular port and beach town located in the north-west of the country that has a population of just over 17,000 residents and is accessible via Gdansk.

Ustka tourism official Janusz Kryszkiewicz told Spiegel Online: "We've got lots of restaurants and pubs, some pretty nice places to stay and a big beach ... I guess you could say we're a pretty good place for foreign visitors."

"We expected to see customers opting for more shorter breaks, but that's just not happening to date," he commented.

A number of recent reports, including one from the Post Office, have indicated that holidaymakers looking to make their cash go further should consider a break in destinations outside the eurozone.

These could include Thailand, Egypt, Bulgaria, Turkey and the USA, according to the Post Office.

Recent research by the Post Office has suggested that travellers could benefit by holidaying outside of the eurozone to take advantage of the strong pound in destinations such as Thailand, South Africa and Egypt.

"This [pact] will pave the way for a comprehensive aviation agreement involving cooperation in key aviation areas such as competition, safety and the environment," commented Jacques Barrot, EC vice president for transport.

The agreement comes a month after the open skies pact between the EU and the USA came into effect, resulting in the creation of numerous new routes between the UK and American destinations.

The event comes as part of the popular Bun Luang Festival and takes place between July 4th and 6th. Phi Ta Khon comprises one huge rainmaking ceremony, which consists of a number of costumed parades, processions and performances.

Locals dress up as so-called masked ghosts, albeit in a more colourful manner than more traditional white-sheeted spirits. In a tradition similar to Halloween, young children run around the area playing tricks on others.

The first day of the festival sees a massive masked parade take place, while the second day brings a spectacular display as the local people fire off a number of rockets. Contests focused on participants' costumes and dancing abilities also occur.

Meanwhile, the third day sees the event take on a more solemn, religious tone, with villagers congregating at the local Buddhist temple to hear a series of sermons.

Loei is located in the north-east region of Thailand, some 450km north of Bangkok.

British Airways also said that it is to increase flight frequencies on its routes from London City to Nice and Edinburgh in September.

"Dublin is an important new route, linking two financial capitals and we are delighted to be able to offer a three-a-day service in direct response to passenger demand," commented Peter Simpson, managing director of the CityFlyer service.

Last week, British Airways revealed plans to operate daily flights from Gatwick Airport to New York as of October.

However, British Airways said that it is to pull its daily flight from Manchester to New York in October, although it will be adding services to Porto and Valencia from Gatwick in the same month.

"The new Gatwick service will give our customers even more choice when flying between London and New York," commented Lynne Embleton of British Airways.

"Not only do we already have an extensive schedule from Heathrow to both JFK and Newark, but next year we will launch business-only flights from London City."

The carrier recently launched new services to Genoa and Antalya from Gatwick, with further short-haul additions to be made over the course of the summer.

The results were compiled by comparing the cost of items such as soft drinks and sun cream.

“Holidaymakers planning trips further afield this year will get excellent value for money by travelling to long haul destinations," commented Helen Warburton, head of travel at the Post Office.

"The pound is still strong against the US dollar and the new open skies agreement introduced this month should mean cheaper flights in the future."

These results appear to echo comments made recently by John Nicholas of Travelex.co.uk, who said that the growing strength of the euro could prompt more travellers to look further than the eurozone when planning their next overseas getaway.

He advised Britons to prepare well in advance for their holidays and buy their currency online to make sure they get the best rates.

Passengers have been advised that the merger will take up to eight months to complete, meaning that those with reservations with either airline can assume that their flight will run as normal.

Customers with both carriers will not have to rebook if they have a confirmed reservation and all existing sales agreements will continue to be honoured.

"The new carrier will offer superior route diversity across the US, Latin America, Europe and Asia and will be better able to overcome the industry's boom-and-bust cycles," commented Northwest Airlines chief executive Doug Steenland.

Delta is known for its coverage of the Caribbean, Latin American, European, Middle Eastern and African markets, while Northwest Airlines has traditionally had strengths in the Asian sector.

The What the Pound Buys Abroad publication from Post Office Travel Services has revealed that sterling has seen significant growth in destinations such as South Africa, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia and the USA over the last 12 months.

Dubai could also offer good value for travellers, as the exchange rate there has been constant over the past year, the Post Office said. It also highlighted the potential for cheaper flights offered by the open skies pact between Europe and the USA.

"We believe that holidaymakers will look very carefully this year at how to get the best value for their money," commented Helen Warburton of the Post Office.

"With the open skies agreement due to come into force in April, they should keep a close eye on transatlantic flight costs, where the market will become more competitive."

According to the International Air Transport Association, there are now 25 per cent more scheduled flights from Europe to the USA a week as a result of the open skies deal.

The twice-daily non-stop services will begin on May 15th and will be operated by new Airbus A321 aircraft, seating 195 passengers across two classes - economy and business class.

Flights will take off from London at 10:20 and 20:00 BST and from Athens at 07:30 and 17:10 local time.

Aegean Airlines commercial director Stavros Dalikas said the route is one of the most important ones for the carrier.

"Greece has always been a very popular, year-round holiday destination for the British and there has been a steady increase in the business sector in recent years," he commented.

Athens has a population of almost 3.2 million people and boasts attractions such as the Acropolis, the National Archaeological Museum and the annual Athens and Epidaurus festivals, among others.

As previously announced by the airline, it is set to introduce new summer routes to Alicante, Antalya, Faro, Genoa, Gibraltar, Ibiza, Malaga, Malta, Palma, Paphos, Poznan and Tunis from the London hub.

All new flights will launch on March 30th, apart from those to Antalya, Genoa, Ibiza and Paphos, which will begin in the period between April and July.

The carrier is also gearing up to start new flights from London City Airport to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Nice and Warsaw and from Heathrow Airport to Malaga.

"As one of the only short-haul, full-service carriers at Gatwick, we combine low fares with complimentary food and drink, pre-allocated seats and the opportunity to join the British Airways Executive Club," commented Robert Boyle, commercial director at British Airways.

The airline recently announced that it is continuing to see demand for its long-haul premium flights grow.
