The group's press officer, Sean Tipton, asserted that an annual policy may be ideal for those who prefer spur-of-the-moment getaways, as it guarantees that these trips are covered in the event anything goes amiss.

The cheapest destination in Poland itself was found to be Ustka, a popular port and beach town located in the north-west of the country that has a population of just over 17,000 residents and is accessible via Gdansk.

Ustka tourism official Janusz Kryszkiewicz told Spiegel Online: "We've got lots of restaurants and pubs, some pretty nice places to stay and a big beach ... I guess you could say we're a pretty good place for foreign visitors."

"We expected to see customers opting for more shorter breaks, but that's just not happening to date," he commented.

A number of recent reports, including one from the Post Office, have indicated that holidaymakers looking to make their cash go further should consider a break in destinations outside the eurozone.

These could include Thailand, Egypt, Bulgaria, Turkey and the USA, according to the Post Office.

Khalid Ahmed bin Sulayem, DTCM director-general, commented: "The next three years will see the most dramatic developments in tourism projects in Dubai and DTCM is poised to play a crucial role in ensuring that Dubai continues to a frontrunner in the region's moves to attract tourists from around the globe."

Dubai's attractions include its various outlandishly designed hotels, the nearby Jumeirah Beach, a massive desert-based ski slope and extensive shopping facilities.

"People might be trimming themselves back on taking a number of holidays, but I think it's fair to say that they are still taking their lengthy overseas holiday."

Nearly six in ten Britons take at least one holiday a year, according to recent research by Ciao Surveys.

The airport offers a number of domestic and European services and is now to focus on long-haul flights traditionally served by Heathrow, such as those to New York.

Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director at the airport, said: "There is not a shadow of a doubt that regional airports in the UK are going to gain in popularity."

He added that the larger number of scheduled airlines and wider choice available means that there is less need for travellers to head to London to make their flights.

Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority reveal that 241 million passengers passed through UK airports in 2007, with numbers flying from regional hubs accounting for 42 per cent of this total.

According to new research from FairFX.com, 57 per cent of Brits intend to cut holiday spending this year.

However, travellers could ease their holiday finances by using a currency card instead of buying foreign cash at the airport, the website suggested.

Such cards enable Britons to purchase currency when the exchange rate is at its best and store it for future use.

"Savvy travellers should consider the benefits of using a currency card to ride out the volatility in the market and lock in great exchange rate deals," commented Stephen Heath, chief executive of FairFX.com.

Recent research by the Post Office has suggested that travellers could benefit by holidaying outside of the eurozone to take advantage of the strong pound in destinations such as Thailand, South Africa and Egypt.

The airline has announced that it is to scrap its inflight beauty offerings and expand its range based in the Heathrow Clubhouse lounge.

Treatments at the facility look set to increase by 70 per cent as a result, while spa facilities will continue to be offered in the airline's other Clubhouses.

"We continually review and adapt the product we are investing in to ensure it reflects what is most valued by our customers," commented Lyell Strambi, chief operating officer at Virgin Atlantic.

"As a result of the review, we are increasing the number of beauty therapists working at the Heathrow Clubhouse."

The carrier unveiled its new Clubhouse facility in Boston in March. The £1 million lounge includes a library and business centre, a living area, a brasserie and a deli.

Other Clubhouses are located at Gatwick Airport, as well as both JFK and Newark airports in New York and hubs in Washington, San Francisco, Johannesburg, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Furniture and fittings entirely constructed from recycled materials will also feature in the hotel, as well as the use of household waste to generate heat and power.

'People who do their bit for the environment when they're at home are likely to be interested in doing the same when they're staying in a hotel," said David Jerome of IHG.

Ways in which holidaymakers can minimise their impact on the environment when abroad include getting around on bike, foot or public transport wherever possible, only using air conditioning and other electric-powered facilities when needed and purchasing local food, according to Carbon Footprint.

Statistics released by the US department of commerce show that UK arrivals rose by almost six per cent to almost 250,000 during the month, accounting for nearly four in ten of all visitors from western Europe.

JFK Airport in New York, Miami and Los Angeles were the top three destinations for overseas visitors during the month.

Meanwhile, Honolulu, New York Newark and San Francisco took fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively. In total, 3.4 million overseas visitors travelled to the USA during January.

"The strong start in 2008 builds on the momentum set in 2007, which was a record-breaking year for international arrivals and receipts," commented commerce manufacturing and services assistant secretary William Sutton.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, 18.3 million Britons travelled overseas between December 2007 and February 2008.

"This [pact] will pave the way for a comprehensive aviation agreement involving cooperation in key aviation areas such as competition, safety and the environment," commented Jacques Barrot, EC vice president for transport.

The agreement comes a month after the open skies pact between the EU and the USA came into effect, resulting in the creation of numerous new routes between the UK and American destinations.

Passengers booking a flight with the airline after this date will be required to pay £26 for a short-haul return journey and £126 for a long-haul return flight where each single trip lasts less than nine hours.

Long-haul flights of more than nine hours will carry a fuel surcharge of £158 for a return trip. Single flight charges are equivalent to half of the total surcharge for the relevant return journeys.

The airline also said that it expects to increase fuel surcharges in non-UK markets.

Rising fuel surcharges is a trend that one analyst has said could become more prevalent in the near future as fuel costs begin to account for a greater proportion of airlines' outgoings.

Speaking on Channel 4 News, aviation analyst Laurie Price said that these increases must be passed on elsewhere in order to allow them to keep operating in a "viable" manner.

From June 7th, Vatnajokull National Park in south-east Iceland will cover an area of 13,000 sq km, including features such as volcanoes, lava flows, huge glaciers, waterfalls, canyons and calderas, sand flats, rivers, lakes and lush vegetation, according to the Iceland Tourist Board.

It will include land that was previously unprotected and incorporate the whole of the Vatnajokull glacier, which is the biggest in Europe.

Holidaymakers in Iceland will be able to check out the park's features through a number of visitor centres, from which they will be able to indulge in a wide range of activities.

"I see a myriad of possibilities for all sorts of activities opening up, such as action tours, eco-recreation, study visits and learning experiences, as well as the chance to experience the nurturing silence of Iceland's highlands," commented Olof Yrr Atladottir, director-general of the Icelandic Tourist Board.

Statistics released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) reveal that more than 1,500 malaria cases were reported last year among British travellers, with five resulting in death.

As a result, the agency is warning Britons to take the necessary precautions before travelling to a country where malaria is prevalent, such as Africa.

Travellers should seek medical advice before going away and take the appropriate prevention drugs, it said.

"Equally as important as protective drugs are measures to prevent mosquito bites, which can include applying insect repellent, wearing cover-up clothing and sleeping under an insecticide-treated bed net," commented Professor Peter Chiodini, head of the HPA's Malaria Reference Laboratory.

Most cases of malaria occur in Central and South America, Africa and parts of Asia and the Middle East.

United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon is set to launch a new campaign to reduce fatal cases of malaria today (April 25th).

Responding to the Treasury's consultation on whether to introduce the new charge, which would replace air passenger duty (APD), IATA chief executive Giovanni Bisignani said the main downside of the tax is that it would not be environmentally effective.

APD currently brings in about £2 billion of revenue every year. The proposed aviation duty would generate £2.5 billion, rising to £3.5 billion by 2012, and would be in place by November 2009.

"I want to know where the money will go. How many trees will the chancellor be planting with £2.5 billion? Padding the UK budget at the expense of holidaymakers, business travellers or exporters is not sound environmental policy," Mr Bisignani commented.

Environmental issues have been top of the agenda for the aviation sector of late, with a number of major organisations - including British Airways, Airbus and Boeing - signing a declaration to do more to tackle climate change at the Aviation and Environmental Summit in Geneva earlier this week.

British Airways was among the signatories of the agreement at the Aviation and Environment Summit in Geneva this week, along with aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing.

While the declaration does not commit the firms involved to meeting set targets, it calls on the aviation industry to do more to research eco-friendly technologies.

Speaking at the summit, British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh said he believed carbon trading was the way forward for the airline sector.

"The goal must be to reduce global emissions at the least cost to the global economy. I believe carbon trading can achieve this," he said, according to Reuters.

A number of organisations have already taken steps towards becoming more environmentally-friendly, with Virgin Atlantic completing the first biofuel-powered flight earlier this year.

Carried out by Ciao Surveys, the poll showed that almost a quarter of respondents would most like to travel to Bermuda, with 15.6 per cent opting for the Greek islands and 13.9 per cent for New York.

Despite this, Australia was found to be the continent that Britons would most like to visit, while most respondents said they choose to go on holiday for relaxation reasons.

And when it comes to booking their breaks, 58 per cent said they prefer to make their reservations online, while 58.6 per cent conduct research ahead of the holiday so they can plan their daily activities.

Last month, the Post Office released a report indicating that the popularity of city breaks in destinations such as Paris and Barcelona could explode this year as holidaymakers seek to keep costs down.

The Competition Commission's (CC's) initial publication on the topic has suggested that the interests of passengers and airlines may not be being fully addressed by BAA owning seven British airports.

In particular, the report suggests that there is potential for competition between Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, as well as between the three London hubs, making BAA's common ownership of these five airports questionable.

However, capacity problems in London need to be addressed before competition concerns can be resolved, the CC said.

"We are particularly concerned by its apparent lack of responsiveness to the differing needs of its airline customers, and hence passengers, and the consequences for the levels, quality, scope, location and timing of investment and levels and quality of service," commented Christopher Clarke, chairman of the BAA airports inquiry.

In response to the report, BAA said that it believes its London airports do not compete with each other and that its Scottish hubs have their own distinct catchment areas. However, it stated that it would "carefully" consider the CC's findings.

Derek Moore, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, said that such holidays are rising in popularity partly due to a growing public awareness of the need to stay fit and healthy.

He explained that sporting breaks can range from cycling in the Loire Valley in France to more adventurous options such as tackling Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania or even heading to the Everest base camp.

Other holidays can focus on specific sporting events and tournaments, such as canoeing breaks and football competitions, Mr Moore added.

"People are much more aware of health issues and the fact that our sedentary daily lives leave us open to potential heart attack and stroke problems in later life," he commented.

"We don't necessarily wish to sit on a beach sunning ourselves for 14 days in the 21st century."

According to the Office for National Statistics, an increasing number of Britons are becoming interested in active pursuits, with almost seven in ten adults participating in at least one sport last year.
