Ecuador is a representative democracy in the heart of South America, south of Colombia, west of Peru and with the coastline of the Pacific Ocean on its western shore. It is one of only two countries in the region that does not border on Brazil and its territory includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, which are located approximately 600 miles from the mainland. Ecuador is not a cohesive, monocultural country, and it is dominated by a loose-knit patchwork of various indigenous ethnicities including people of Spanish and African descent. The country was once a part of the Inca empire and the country has some of the best-preserved Incan architecture within the Americas. The discovery of oil and the rise of related industry has transformed the country from a localised farming economy to a more progressive and developed one that has brought progress in health, education, and housing. Main international airports include Guayaquil, Quito, Esmeraldas, Latacunga, and Manta.

The capital city of Ecuador is Quito, a world heritage site since the 1970s due to being a well preserved and undisturbed example of a historical Latin American centre. The largest city in the country is Guayaquil. One of the biggest tourist attractions is Cuenca, which is the third largest city in the country. It is famous for its Spanish style colonial constructions and architecture. Ecuador is also famous for its beautiful rural areas and fantastic landscape.
