Full of rainforests, Suriname posesses a natural beauty. The smallest state in South America, Suriname is located on the northeast coast of the continent and is home to just under half a million people, most of whom live towards the north coast. The capital city, Paramaribo, is located on this northern coast, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Paramaribo is also home to the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport that operates both domestic and international flights. Despite its size, Paramaribo will charm any visitors with its heady mix of Dutch colonial and American wild west architecture, whilst grassy squares are lined with government buildings. The capital truly is a melting pot of cultures and races, something its residents are proud of. Mosques and synagogues are happy neighbours, while the aromas of Indian spices emit tantalisingly from Roti shops.
Outside of its tiny capital, Suriname offers a feast of gloriously natural rainforest. These rainforests, display a wide range of flora and fauna and are the primary reason that many visitors trek to Suriname. So important are the rainforests to the country, that 30% of Suriname's total land area is protected by law as a nature reserve.
Other landmarks in Suriname include the century old cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and a modern bridge built to cross the River Suriname. This new bridge, named after former president of Suriname, Jules Wijdenbosch, is 52 metres high and over 1.5 kilometres long.
