Mazeru Bazaar nourishes small economy

MSU, Maseru

The Bazaar at Maseru, Lesotho, showcases the products of the country’s small businesses. It aims not only to nourish a small economy but to benefit tourism efforts on all levels.

Maseru Bazaar is based on the concept that Maseru is a colourful, vibrant and entertaining destination, where diversity is abundant and business thrives alongside culture and tradition. The bazaar is a platform to promote commercial activity and generate income, during trying economic times. The products on display are made by small enterprises only and include products made of leather, grass, mohair and other locally produced goods. Young entrepreneurs display their products on the fashion court, where up and coming designers showcase their talent and broaden their business network.

Since the inception of this event, there has been an improvement in product quality and diversification. It is expected that this will help provide sustainable business, when entrepreneurs introduce new products in the market. The craft court tends to be the largest aspect, with over 70 registered exhibitors displaying their products.

Maseru Bazaar also provides entertainment, in the form of local musicians showcasing their talents. The entertainment also serves as a draw for potential customers. As the bazaar is held every three months (May, August, November, and February), musicians play on a rotating basis.

Currently, the bazaar is running smoothly and successfully. The people of Maseru look to their culture, as an identity and a brand. A brand which they hope will attract necessary tourism to their, as yet, undiscovered gem of a city.
