Salvador Carnival
Carnival is the largest part in the world, drawing literally millions of revellers.
Come be a part of one of the world’s biggest parties at the Salvador Carnival in Brazil.
The Salvador Carnival is one of the most famous parties in the world. In Brazil, Carnival tops holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and New Years as the favourite occasion for natives. Thousands of Brazilians, along with throngs of tourists and visitors, flock to Salvador each February for the Carnival. The Guinness Book of World Records has officially named the Salvador Carnival the biggest street party on the planet, estimating its numbers at almost two million people.
Carnival lasts almost a week and contains several events. Of course, there is a lot of music. Huge trucks carry live bands and dancers through the streets. In addition, “momo”, the King of Carnival, is given the keys to the city of Salvador to mark the official start of the party. There are also three circuits that parade through the city. The Osmar Circuit is the oldest circuit and contains the most traditional parades while the other two, the Campo Grande and Barra-Ondina circuits, are more recent.
Parties rage constantly during Carnival. Many start in the afternoon and continue on well into the next morning. The Carnival is heavily policed for this reason, though the overall atmosphere is one of fun. The Carnival officially begins on the Thursday morning preceding Fat Tuesday.
