Christmas in Bacau
Spend Christmas in Bacau
Bacau may not be the first place you think of when wondering which destination to spend your Christmas holidays. However, with the Festival of Moldavian Winter Traditions taking place each year, it offers something unique and different from a more 'usual' Christmas destination.
Located in the historic region of Modovia, Bacau is the main city in Bacau County, Romania. Each year around Christmas time, folk artists from all over the surrounding regions come together for the Festival of Moldovian Winter Traditions. Carols, which form a very important part of Romanian folklore, are sung in abundance, but they are not the simple songs that you have come to know as part of the Christmas tradition in the United Kingdom.
Bacau boasts a wealth of traditions and artists and you will find their wares in abundance in the city. From carpet-makers to weavers, wood and stone carvers and potters, the folk art you will enjoy in Romania is timeless. You might even find a special Moldovan carpet to bring home. Smooth and without pile, it is made from the same weave as linen.
Unlike in the United Kingdom, Christmas in Bacau is celebrated in January, so there is no reason why you cannot spend time at home with your family before taking in the joy that is found in exploring other cultures around special holidays. Should you find yourself in Bacau for New Year as well, look out for the 'Capra dance' (capra means goat.) Originally a solemn ceremony, it has now become a celebration of traditional art, with more colourful ornaments and carpets on display.
