The rise and rise of Algeria’s second city
Oran is fast attracting trade and tourism in equal measure and it is easy to see why.
The city of Oran is Algeria’s second largest city and is situated on the north coast. The city contains one million inhabitants, with up to two million more in the surrounding region itself. In the past few years, Oran has seen a vast increase in growth and development and businesses are starting to take notice of this sprawling coastal city.
Oran has always been a major port, in both wartime and peacetime. Recent investment from the Chinese has facilitated a new hospital and major hotels and more development is in the pipeline. A huge increase in trade and commerce has made Oran an increasingly important business destination. The city is increasing in prosperity and its many attractions are putting this ancient city firmly on the commercial map.
Although not yet in the top ten as a tourist destination, Oran can offer an historic citadel, the Cathédrale de Sacré Couer, the Great Mosque of 1796, the Demaeght Museum, major hotels, and a central railway station, la Gare D’Oran, with routes throughout Algeria. Oran is also the birthplace of Albert Camus and Yves St Laurent.
With its new popularity, investment in tourism is earmarked for the Petit Lac area of Oran. Algeria’s second largest lake is to be developed as a recreational area to include water sports, hotels, and other leisure attractions.
The year round warm climate and the short flight time of just over two hours from Heathrow puts Oran firmly on the map. With overseas investment rising steadily and Oran expanding consistently, this Algerian gem on the Mediterranean coast is becoming a firm contender for business.
