B & H Airlines continues to provide passenger and cargo services to EuropeB & H Airlines have provided subsidised flights for pilgrims to Medjugorje, which is an important site for Catholic pilgrims. This follows six children of the Catholic faith reporting to see the Virgin Mary appear to them in 1981. Subsequently large numbers of Catholic make an annual pilgrimage to the site in the hope of seeing the phenomena for themselves. The site itself has not been officially declared as a site of pilgrimage by the Catholic church, however around one million visitors each year make the trip to the town. It is estimated that 30 million people have made the journey since 1981. The flights from Pescara in Italy to Mostar, the nearest airport to Medjugorje provide a valuable link for these pilgrims and in turn have enhanced the profitability of the airline.
Founded as Air Bosnia in 1994, B & H Airlines continues to provide charter passenger services as well as scheduled flights and small cargo services to many key destinations throughout Europe. Some of the cities they fly into include Vienna, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Stockholm with their focus city airport located in Banja Luka and their hub in Sarajevo.
The company was revived by the Government of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2005 when it began running two ATR-72 planes. In 2008, the government announced that B & H Airlines / Bosnia Air had sold 49 per cent of its shares to Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines has taken over the outstanding government loans and the cost associated with leasing its two Boeing aircraft.
