SpanairSpanair agrees codesharing deal with Brazilian carrier TAM, improving routes between Spain and Brazil.

Spanish airline, Spanair, has increased the number of destinations it serves by strengthening its relationship with Brazilian airline, TAM. The two companies, which already enjoyed a degree of collaboration through their membership of the Star Alliance network and a shared frequent flyer programme, have introduced a codesharing agreement, allowing their customers to access a wider range of destinations.

The agreement enables Spanair passengers to choose from a wide range of South American destinations served by TAM, specifically on direct flights from Madrid to Sao Paolo. Similarly, TAM customers will benefit from being able to use Spanair flights to reach connecting destinations across Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Malaga, Tenerife and Santiago de Compostela.

Mike Szucs, Spanair’s CEO, said the airline was, "very pleased to be signing this agreement with TAM Airlines”. He went on to add that the deal would expand Spanair’s network of destinations to Brazil and South America, thanks to their Star Alliance partnership. Previously, the airlines operated a reciprocal agreement relating to their loyalty schemes. Regular Spanair travellers could earn and redeem miles on the company’s SpanairStar programme when travelling on TAM flights, while TAM customers were able to earn and redeem miles on Spanair flights.

As part of the Star Alliance network, Spanair enjoys codesharing agreements with a number of other airlines, including US Airways, Air Canada, Continental Airways and UK based BMI. The TAM agreement marks Spanair out as an airline that is constantly seeking out new destinations for its customers.
