MonarchAtmosfair acknowledge Monarch Airlines as the greenest airline in the world.

At the ITB Berlin travel show Monarch Airlines (ZB) was recognised as being the greenest airline in the world. The low budget carrier, which is the oldest airline within the UK, was rewarded for its superior environmental policies, as investigated by the non-profit organization, Atmosfair. The airline operates mainly within the UK, including the airports Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Birmingham and flies to over 50 destinations worldwide.

The extensive studies carried out by Atmosfair, which is a carbon offsetting organization founded in 2004 as part of an environmental project started by the German Federal Ministry, looked at fuel efficiency and the normal numbers of passengers each aircraft carried. Their airline index took in 92 percent of all international air traffic. However, budget carriers were left out due to the fact that it was hard to compare them equally with other carriers because they tend to get subsidies and also take routes to airports located far away.

Monarch was particularly praised for its airlines effectiveness and good seating density per flight. They were able to fend off tough competition which included Air New Zealand Link, Air Europa, Kingfisher Airlines and Sri Lankan Airlines. Second place was taken by Condor, a German carrier, and third by Canadian Air Transat, which made it the long-haul carrier with the most efficiency.
