This French port village is a nature lovers delight!

LRT, LorientLorient France has it all with an abundance of café terraces, fresh seafood, and nature activities to keep everyone entertained.

If France is your destination choice this year, consider the town of Lorient. Situated at the mouth of the Ter, Blavet, and Scorff Rivers and protected by the Ile de Griox, Lorient is the fourth largest city in Brittany. It remains a major fishing seaport, the second largest in France, which means fresh seafood here is plentiful.

There are many reasons to visit Lorient, but due to the town’s destruction over 50 years ago, architecture is not one of them. Instead, this quaint fishing town offers guests miles of long sandy beaches and a deluge of outdoor cafes that are ideal for people watching.

Lorient is the perfect destination for those who love the outdoors, with its thick forest and beaches ideal for surfing. Take in a family day of horseback riding along one of the many beaches. There are also kayak trips up the Laita available for the more energetic members of your travel group.

For local sights, take a boat over to Locmiquelic or Port Louise, which are quaint port towns. Port Louise is home to a grand castle that was built by Vauban, and has been converted to a marine museum. There is also a ferry to run passengers the half-mile to Ile de Groix, which is a natural haven for those interested in exploring nature.

The town is well known for its annual Festival Interceltique that is held during the month of August. This massive and lively weeklong Celtic festival is mixed with performers from Wales, Scotland, Cornwall, Brittany, Spain, and Ireland. The atmosphere of this enormous festival is incredible!
