The Falkland Islands are an archipelago situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 290 miles as the crow flies from the coast of the mainland of the Americas. It is an archipelago, consisting of East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 lesser islands. The entire area is a self-governing British Overseas Territory. Its capital is Stanley and its inhabitants speak English. Argentina has disputed sovereignty over the Falklands for nearly 200 years although this claim is not supported by the Islands themselves. The Falklands have seen economic growth in fishing and tourism economies. It is composed of ethnic Falkland Islanders, British, Spaniard, Japanese and Chilean people.

Its main international airport is RAF Mount Pleasant, situated 27 miles west of Stanley. Tourist attractions include the Whale Bones statue outside the Anglican Church and the Falkland’s Islands museum, which is also located in the capital. The war memorial for the 1982 war between Britain and Argentina is another population attraction. Wildlife is also a big draw towards the islands and many species of birds including Cormorants, Rockhopper Penguins, and Night Herons flock to the island and inhabit various regions. Seals are also a significant draw and many live around the island and in the waters surrounding it. Due to the tension with Argentina, many Islanders lack goodwill towards Spanish culture and use of the Spanish language is often dismissed.
