McAllen draws visitors to its wildlife and nature preserve

MFE, Mc Allen

Located five miles from the Mexican border, the city of McAllen is uniquely situated near the Rio Grande. This part of Texas is known for its extreme heat in the summers and its heavily Mexican-influenced culture. The McAllen Botanical Gardens are also a major fixture of the city and a seasonal delight, providing a lush, peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding big city buildings and the busy roads that lead to the border with Mexico.

The botanical gardens are the oldest and largest native tract of forest remaining in the McAllen area. Doubling as a wildlife and nature centre, the gardens also provide a habitat of dense forestry and lush green trees for hundreds of species of birds, native wildlife, and two endangered Texan reptiles.

Visitors come here year round to photograph and view the wildflower fields located here. They stretch on for as far as the eye can see and are ablaze with colour every month of the year. Butterflies and dragonflies dance around from plant to plant, and flower to flower. It has become one of the favoured retreats of many visitors to this part of Texas for a long time.

Trails cut through the long green stretches of fields and forest here and follow along a meandering stream where people can take a break by the trickling water for a picnic. The area is wonderful for group outings as well as solitary retreats. With flights to Texas easily accessible, this is an out-of-the-way place that many would enjoy.
