A former Islamic Culture capital, Baku is the largest city and port in Azerbaijan, and one of the most important tourist destinations of Caucasus. Only recently, it was also entered in to the Guinness Book of Records after becoming home to the world's tallest flagpole.
Located in National Flag Square, the flag flies atop a 126 metre-tall flagpole. The flag itself, at a massive 70 metres by 35 metres, is the world's tallest flag.
National Flag Square has become something of a tourist draw, with people from the world over making Baku their preferred holiday destination. The President laid the first stone in the square in 2007. When the square opened in 2010, it inspired the opening of the National Flag Museum and the announcement that 9th November would be National Flag Day.
With architecture in the city ranging from modern buildings recently erected to the Old City core, as well as the open layout of the main port, Baku is a city which will appeal to old and young alike. It is not just the world's tallest flag and flagpole which draws people to Baku. The city has a wide range of amenities offering cultural activities reflecting both a national and international portfolio. Recently host to the Eurovision Dance contest, as well as the Islamic Culture Capital, Baku is as diverse as it is intriguing, and the perfect destination for those wishing to experience the old juxtaposed with the new.
