Jerez de la Frontera in Southern Spain is world famous for being the birthplace of sherry. The name itself is a derivation of its place name Jerez- pronounced “Herr-ETH”. The region contains a great deal of prosperity and can stand alone even without the perennial and vast popularity of its tourist trade on the South Costas.
Jerez dates back to the 11th century and its ancient and Moorish influences can be seen today in the architecture of the town’s buildings, some of which are now Catholic churches having originally been built as mosques.
With the many sherry Bodegas (wine makers) in the centre of town, Jerez provides a sophisticated and historic tourist destination with a world famous Annual Flamenco Festival in early Spring, filling the town for over two weeks with Flamenco enthusiasts from around the globe.
The region is self sufficient and known for its horse breeding, agriculture, cattle ranches, Flamenco, wine, sherry and brandy. It is a wealthy region that continues to attract visitors as both a leisure and a business destination. The local economy is healthy and attracts business investors and speculators from around the world.
Jerez airport, also known as La Parra, is a simple two-storey terminal that nevertheless receives regular flights to and from the UK. Just eight kilometres from the town of Jerez and only 50 kilometres from Seville, the airport is proving popular with visitors to Andalucía wishing to bypass the holidaymakers at Malaga. A two-hour flight time from London makes this an increasingly attractive business destination.
