Fort de France, originally named Fort Royal when it was founded in 1638, is the capital of France's Caribbean overseas department of Martinque. Lying on the western side of Martinique nestled between plains and hills at the mouth of the River Madame, Fort De France well known for being the birth place of Napoleon 's wife Josephine.
By far the highlight of the calendar on the island is the Fort De France cultural festival that aims to bring a reflection on Caribbean culture to the island every year through the medium of dance, arts, and community participation.
There are many reasons to choose Fort De France as a holiday destination. Its weather is second to none, the pace of life is slow and relaxed, offering a true chance to unwind from your daily life, but by far, the best reason to visit the island is the cultural festival.
It first began in 1970 as a way to explore African culture, but since then has morphed in to a more Caribbean experience, providing an entertaining way of keeping their history alive and sharing it with visitors. With around 300 local and international artists taking part in the festival, it is an eclectic mix that is sure to appeal to everyone. Music is everywhere, from the streets to the concert halls, theatre takes to the open-air, and dancers seem to be everywhere you turn. Taking place in the summer each year, it really is the perfect holiday destination.
