The oasis city of Tamanrasset in Southern Algeria is a popular destination for tourists, especially during the cooler months of the year. Surrounded by the Sahara Desert, the less harsh climate of the oasis makes the city a well-used base for visitors who wish to explore the rugged scenery of the area.
Tamanrasset has recently become the base for trekking holidays, designed for visitors who wish to explore the nearby Ahaggar or Hoggar Mountains. The Hoggar Mountains are one of the biggest mountain ranges in the Sahara and formed mainly from volcanic rock. Due to the climate being cooler than much of the Sahara, these mountains are a great source of biodiversity.
It is now possible to trek through the Hoggar Mountains, beginning your journey in Tamanrasset and spend several days walking through moderate terrain of desert trails and sand, with occasional scrambling on scree. Trekkers will be assisted by baggage camels and will be accompanied by a trained guide throughout the journey.
Visitors embarking on these treks may find themselves walking up to 9 or 10 miles per day, though the guided treks usually take place in the cooler months, escaping the more extreme temperatures of summer. Travellers embarking on these tours pay a fixed price for the journey, which covers airport transfers, accommodation in Tamanrasset and all meals for the journey. The treks are a great way of exploring this unique destination in safety while learning about the area.
