Jazz arrived in Bologna, Italy from the United States of America in the late 1930s and was an instant hit with the locals, who gathered together over a glass of locally produced wine to enjoy this strange and wonderful music. Over the years the city’s appreciation of jazz has evolved into the Bologna Jazz Festival, which attracts thousands of music lovers each year; the festival has also attracted many great jazz musicians including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Herbie Hancock.
Hailed as the oldest jazz festival in Italy and previously known as the Festival Internazionale del Jazz, this musical event takes place annually in November and draws large crowds to enjoy sensational musical performances.
The Bologna Jazz Festival is continually growing and each year introduces its audiences to the latest and most distinguished performers from the international jazz scene.
The festival takes place during the course of a week with both locals and tourists being treated to evening performances of different jazz styles in many theatres, pubs, clubs and restaurants across the city of Bologna and the surrounding area, which also encompasses the cities of Modena and Ferrana. With over 100 hours of scheduled music to be enjoyed by music lovers, the majority of the featured performances take place at the famous Teatro delle Celebrazioni in Bologna. Along with the performances by the major bands and stars on the programme, there are also concerts by young up and coming jazz performers both from Italy and around the world.
