Land of sea and sky

FDH, Friedrichshafen

Which destination combines high-tech achievement with ancient architecture and spectacular views? Friedrichshafen, on the northern shores of Lake Constance, provides a wonderful location, climate and idyllic surroundings with unlimited opportunities for enjoying being in, on or next to the water – and also up in the air. There are countless hotels, guesthouses and holiday homes and the weather is mostly mild and sunny, with almost a Mediterranean climate.

Home to the world-famous airships developed by Graf Zeppelin, Friedrichshafen’s Technology and Art Museum includes the world's largest collection of artefacts and documents relating to the history of airships and also presents a comprehensive exhibition of art from the Middle Ages to the modern day.

Whilst aviation enthusiasts can take sightseeing flights on a Zeppelin or go hot-air ballooning, those who prefer their feet on the ground can visit the viewing tower at the harbour jetty – a winding stairway climbing 22 metres to an observation platform. Here, there is a stunning unbroken view of the town, the lake and the Swiss and Austrian Alps.

Friedrichshafen offers walking, cycling and horse riding. A stroll along the promenade on the lakeshore provides spectacular views – orchards, vineyards, and conservation areas, including Mediaeval abbeys. There is a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere and the eye-catching scenery can also be admired from one of the many restaurants serving local specialities such as freshly caught fish and fine local wines.

At or below sea level, enjoy windsurfing, fishing, motor boating, diving, sailing, waterskiing or canoeing. Lake Constance is renowned as a great place to swim, and trips on pleasure cruisers are popular activities.
