International Women’s Day is a very popular national holiday in Kiev. It was first introduced by the Soviet Communists but has since lost its political origins since the Ukraine became independent. Ukrainian men are expected to give their women the day off and do all the work around the house. Men give small gifts such as flowers and chocolate to their wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, colleagues and female friends.
International Women’s Day is celebrated in March every year and was originally a celebration of “the heroic woman worker”, but is now a National Holiday in the Ukraine. It now celebrates spring and the unconditional love, patience, beauty, wisdom and sacrifice of Ukrainian women.

The city has many beautiful churches and cathedrals including the Pechersk Lavra (Caves Monastery), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also a number of monuments, such as the Motherland Monument towering over the city and the new monument in Independence Square, and museums including the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. The only remaining part of Kiev’s city walls is the 11th Century Golden Gates.
