“Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam offers the chance to not only relax on the beach, but to explore fragrant countryside whilst marvelling at wildlife. Enjoy sumptuous seafood ensuring you get there before mass tourism”, so said Sam Llewellyn writing for the Telegraph in 2009. With completion of the new international airport expecteD, it may already be too late to avoid the tourist rush.
The new airport is located ten kilometres from Duong Dong Town and will have the capability to handle the Boeing 767, and the latest Airbus passenger carriers A320 and A321. By the year 2020, annual arrivals of 2.5 million passengers per year are anticipated.
For now this island, the biggest in Vietnam, set like a jewel in the gulf of Thailand, still retains a lot of the ambiance of the Vietnam of ten years ago. An ecologically responsible and forward thinking administration has turned more than 70% of the islands lush terrain over to nature conservation, but there is still enough coastline and coral reef remaining to make Phu Quoc a prime tourist destination in the coming years.
Diving and snorkelling around the coast, in the warm waters of Phu Quoc, are perhaps the most popular tourist activities, with the best location being the north-western side of the island, and a small archipelago to the south. The nutritious runoff from the Mekong River and the lovely warm water temperatures give this destination the best hard coral growth in the whole of Vietnam.
Just one more reason to call Phu Quoc a paradise destination
